Remote Like Me: An Interview with Taylor Lane

Hello, WIFMCO! It’s Miranda, your trusty Membership Chair here to introduce you to Taylor Lane of Remote Like Me. Taylor is offering our newest WIFMCO membership benefit with her resume overhaul discount. Working in film and media can mean a lot of travel and freelance work…Or maybe you are looking to do more editing from home (or Hawaii)? Taylor specializes in helping to fine-tune your resume and job search skills so you land those jobs. Check out what she has to say below!

1) First thing first, who are you and what do you do?
My name is Taylor Lane and I’m the founder of Remote Like Me, a membership site that helps remote hopefuls find and land remote jobs. I run small group programs, monthly memberships, and offer one on one coaching to guide my clients through life-changing transformations into the remote workforce.

[WiFMO Note: A “remote career” means you don’t consistently go to a specific location to work. Many of us working in film and media experience this with our freelance work. “Virtual Teams” is another way to describe working in remote teams and “Distributed Teams” is also used to indicate employees are spread all throughout the world. It used to be commonly called “work from home,” but that is now associated with scams. Remote is the way that many jobs are starting to go–particularly media, marketing and tech jobs. Video editing jobs and web designer jobs are frequently posted in remote career groups.]

2) Why do you do what you do?
I had a very personal life transformation when I started working remotely. I was able to be anywhere in the world which was obviously fabulous, but it really hit me when I was able to fly home and care for ill family members multiple times. Everyone has their own reason for going remote, but my own experience with the freedom of location independence motivates me to help others create that for themselves.

3) What is your favorite thing about helping/mentoring someone towards their dream job?
My favorite thing about helping someone get their dream job is the personal transformation that happens along the way. Clients realize what kind of person they can become through making this dream a reality, and it’s inspiring! I’ve seen clients discover their worth and finally negotiate a salary that they deserve, moms who are now able to work from home instead of missing out on precious moments they’ll never get back, and people who finally start their lifelong desire to travel or move abroad. That’s my favorite part.

4) Why did you decide to center on women in your business (or in aspects of your business)?
I decided to create the VIP membership which is only open to women because it’s a sacred space for female remote hopefuls to be heard, supported, and guided through this process. Every member appreciates being surrounded by others who get it and are going towards the same goal. I believe it fosters community and contributes towards the success rate of the group.

5) What is your favorite movie or TV show and why?
I am so not a movie person. I often get laughed at for not knowing any of the classics. I AM, however, a series fan. I love digging into a few seasons, following extended storylines of characters that I relate to, and hey, maybe even re-watching seasons if it’s a show I love. #guiltyascharged. Some of my favorites are Sons of Anarchy, Black Mirror, How To Get Away With Murder, Scandal, and any of the Real Housewives shows.
